The Alternative Guarded Tool Rest replaces your lathe’s toolrest. It is used with the Clark Deep Hollowing System and a Fulcrum Support Tube for lathes with a tall banjo. Its purpose it to keep the hollowing bar from falling down but is only a convenience since you can use the standard toolrest that is supplied with your lathe. It necessary to have one of these to mount the Fulcrum Support Tube, however some lathes have a banjo which is too high. In this case, you can get the alternative Guarded Tool Rest. However, the pivot swivel mechanism has been shortened so most lathes can now use the standard guarded tool rest. Please check with us by providing the spindle centerline the top of the banjo (with tool rest removed) dimension. If it is too short then you will need the alternative GTR if you want to use a Fulcrum Support Tube. Using the Ultrabar *1.75″ diameter hollowing bar) and its large Fulcrum Support Tube will require use of this Alternative Guarded Tool Rest.
NOTE: the current version uses a 17″ plate with slot and a 17″ cross bar. The larger bar and plate pictured flexed too much when doing deep hollowing.
